HOMEGROWN WITH PRIDE IN THE USA: THE CAR CUBBY

Car without Car Cubby

Q: Describe your company.

A: I run a small operation that sells an accessory for the Toyota Prius, and have been in business since 2009.  I have a manufacturing partner, a shipping partner, and an international distributor. I get custom cardboard boxes made by a supplier in Texas – they are sized so that no packing material is needed.  The product is also available through Toyota dealers.

Q:  What are your best selling products?

A: The Car Cubby is a simple but smart accessory for the 2004-2009 Toyota Prius.  It is a small plastic tray that fits between the front seats to hold small items.

Q: Describe how it is made.

A: It is made from plastic by precision cutting, then thermo-forming – using heat to bend the piece.

Q: Why manufacture in America?

A: I found that the manufacturing cost domestically is low enough to negate any cost advantage in overseas production.

Q: Where are you located?

A: I’m located in Seattle, and work with a local plastic fabricator to produce the product.  I have also worked with a manufacturer in the Los Angeles area and have found the domestic suppliers to be competitive.  The material is sourced from Huntsville, Alabama.

Q: Favorite customer review?

A: “The Car Cubby really is the bomb. My wife keeps her purse there, where it is handy but out of sight. I was surprised to find it’s also big enough to hold my photo gear bag so my camera is always handy (but not visible) and not relegated to the back seat and out of reach.”

“Got it Thursday. Very fast shipping and super easy installation. It really holds a lot. We went to the library yesterday and it held all our books and DVDs. Great little gadget.”
